Spiritual Disciplines Blog - Patterns & Practices

Life never settles down. Discipline is one of those things that looks great on paper. The idea of making progress—especially in the area of your relationship with God—is higly motivating. The trouble is, discipline is difficult. It involves struggle. And it never seems to fit naturally into our busy schedules.

We often find ourselves thinking, "When life settles down a bit, I'll..." But we should have learned by now that life never settles down. Whatever we want to accomplish, we must do it with life unsettled. In the same way, if we're ever going to discipline ourselves for the purpose of godliness, we've got to do it when life is like it is now. (Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life: Study Guide, back cover, Donald S. Whitney, NavPress, (c) 1994).

This blog will examine the spiritual disciplines that can bring us closer to God.

What patterns and practices in your life connect you to God?

Disipline is not necessarily something you are born with but rather something you learn and develop. Set a goal - I want to read 1 Bible verse a day for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks set another goal - read 2 verses a day for 2 more weeks and so on. Start off slow with a goal you can easily achieve and gradually increase the intensity. Not only will God bless your socks off but you will be well on your way to developing a spiritual habit and disipline

This is a great idea and I'm looking forward to how it develops!

The number 1 goal is to read a scripture verse with my girls every morning and talk about it.I know how important it is to have God's word written on our hearts.I was startled when I needed to quote a verse and couldn't remember it. I had all my verses memorized at one time~some to encourage non-believers~some to help me in troubled times. That is my goal~to keep scripture memorized and to teach my girls to do the same. Blessings, rose
