Guidance

During our discussion of patterns that connect us to God, I hear the phrases “listen to God” Matthew 17:5 and “keep in step with God’s Spirit.” Galatians 5:25 How do we know for sure that the voice we are hearing is God’s voice? How do we know if we are keeping in step with God’s spirit?

Cheryl Lacy suggests the following answer:

1 John 4:1 says: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” How do we do this?

    1 John 4:2-6 says:

2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. 4You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
What are some of the false messages that come from the world? Can you offer what God’s word says about that message? Write us, here, at the blog!

This is an issue I struggle with especially if I have been praying and not getting an "answer" right away. Years ago, I heard the concept of "witness of two" Meaning you need two things from God to confirm His answer. It can be scripture reading, a Godly person who is praying for you and comes up with the same verse, article, etc. Sometimes when I get a answer it is so exciting that it confirms my faith and reaffirms that God really is in control!

Sometimes I feel like saying,"Do the opposite of what the world says." I need to put on the helmet of salvation to guard my mind everyday! Abortion, homosexuality,pre-marital sex, adultery, blasphemy~are all considered to be acceptable in the world. What does it matter is it is done by consenting adults? It matters to God! Satan's handiwork is in all this sin and the people of this world can not even identify his work because they are not in God's word.I was in a conversation with my Aunt Carole yesterday. She tells me that the Bible is man made~that it is not true~and that as long as she is a good person she is fine. She is in her 60's and still can not identify satan's handiwork. I tried to tell her about Jesus and she did not even want to hear His name. She would not even be here if it wasn't for Him! All I can do is pray for her and hope the holy spirit can get through to her. Blessings, Rose

Messages from the world? How about advertising! The back of the magazine I just picked up has a Dove ad that says "There is nothing more fabulous than a woman who exudes confidence." Makes me think of two things right off the bat: (1) That REALLY there's nothing more fabulous than experiencing God's redeeming love, and (2) Reminds of the confidence John talks about in 1 John 5:14--"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us," and from the writer of Hebrews--"So we say with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?'"

I know from experience how easy it is to subconsciously internalize the messages of advertising, so I try to be more thoughtful as I read or hear them and try to use them to remind me of something from God's word that IS true and internalize that instead. Anybody else have thoughts on this idea?
